Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
